Federal government must immediately break off cyber dialogue with the u.s

Commentary on the new bnd scandal

After the further bnd scandal, that an employee sold bnd information to an american secret service, there must be very fundamental consequences. It is not only helpless, but an irresponsible trivialization to confine oneself to pleading for clarification to the american government and institutions and to hope that the burghers and the media will quickly forget about it again.

The american government deliberately accepts a permanent, deep damage of the german-american relations. This has long been the case.

In this situation, a cyber dialogue is an absolute farce. The german government makes a laughing stock of itself. The federal government must therefore immediately cancel this alibi event. In the same way, all agreements with the usa concerning the exchange of data must now finally be suspended. German government must immediately request eu commission to suspend pnr and swift agreements. The ttip negotiations must be interrupted because there is no longer any basis for trust.

Now the federal government must finally act. Personnel consequences will have to follow.

The federal government should finally stop making citizens responsible for their own data security. This is demonstrably not possible. On the contrary, the german government has the obligation to ensure secure communication and to finally make and promote proposals for a parallel network in europe. The citizen cannot effectively protect himself from nsa snooping. The time of downplaying is over.

Sabine leutheusser-schnarrenberger was elected to the german bundestag for the first time in 1990 for the fdp. From 1992 to 1996 and from 2009 to 2013, she was federal minister of justice and always stood up for citizens’ rights, most recently in the prevention of data retention.
